The short answer
Stay in Funchal if your plans centre on Pico do Arieiro (officially spelled Areeiro), the east of the island and a first visit with restaurants and sightseeing: Pico do Arieiro is 40 minutes away and the airport 20. Stay on the south-west coast, in Calheta or Ponta do Sol, if your hikes are Rabaçal, Fanal and Porto Moniz: Rabaçal is 30 to 40 minutes from there, against 1 h 05 from Funchal. Ponta do Sol is the best single compromise, with Pico do Arieiro at 1 h 00, Rabaçal at 40 minutes and Fanal at 50.
The east near the airport (Santa Cruz, Caniço, Machico) suits short stays and early flights. The north coast is for landscape and hiking: most of it is 50 minutes to 1 h 15 from the airport, with Santana (25 minutes) the exception.
💡 Whichever base you pick, you will drive. A search for “cheap car hire” shows prices, not drive times, so choose the base before you book car hire. On Madeira, car rental is a tool for reaching trailheads, and the base decides how much time you spend behind the wheel. If you still need to rent a car, read the table first.
Base-picker table: minutes by car from each base
Read the two columns that matter most together: Pico do Arieiro (the east and central hiking base) against Rabaçal and Fanal (the west). No base is close to both. The Rabaçal time is the drive to the road access point, not to the levada itself.

Driving times from Valhalla/OpenStreetMap routing, October 2026 — usually within 20–25% of Google Maps. Mountain roads, tunnel works and Funchal rush hour add time. Times are rounded to the nearest 5 minutes.
Sun and cloud are planning tendencies, not guarantees for any single property: the south coast is generally sunnier and drier, the north coast greener and wetter, and the mountains form their own, cloudier zone. Do not assume southern weather at Porto Moniz. Weather side, parking and character for every base are in the guide below.
Four bases, four verdicts
Funchal
Best for: A first visit, mixed sightseeing, restaurants, and Pico do Arieiro.
Hikes in range: Pico do Arieiro 40 min, Ponta de São Lourenço 30, the airport 20.
Weak spot: The west: Rabaçal is 1 h 05 away and Fanal 1 h 15, so west-coast hikes become long days. Funchal can be sunny while the mountains sit in cloud.
South-west sun coast
Best for: Sun, quiet villages and a west-coast hiking base (Calheta, Ponta do Sol, Madalena do Mar, Jardim do Mar).
Hikes in range: Rabaçal 30–40 min and Fanal 45–55 min from all four towns; Porto Moniz about an hour.
Weak spot: Pico do Arieiro is 1 h 00 from Ponta do Sol and 1 h 05 to 1 h 25 from the other three; the airport is 35 min (Ponta do Sol) to an hour (Jardim do Mar). Ponta do Sol is the balanced choice; Calheta the most direct for Rabaçal.
East near the airport
Best for: Short stays, early or late flights, Ponta de São Lourenço (Caniço, Santa Cruz, Machico).
Hikes in range: Airport 5–15 min, Ponta de São Lourenço 15–25, Pico do Arieiro 40–50, Achada do Teixeira 45–55.
Weak spot: The west: Fanal is 1 h 20 to 1 h 30 and Porto Moniz over an hour. Ask about aircraft noise, overnight parking and late check-in.
North coast
Best for: Landscape, Fanal and Porto Moniz, accepting cloud and fewer services (Porto Moniz, Seixal, São Vicente, Santana).
Hikes in range: From Porto Moniz or Seixal, Fanal is 25–30 min. Santana is the exception: Achada do Teixeira 20 min, the airport 25, Pico do Arieiro 50.
Weak spot: Porto Moniz is 1 h 15 from the airport and 1 h 35 from Pico do Arieiro; the north is greener, cloudier and wetter than the south.

Base-by-base guide
Island size gives context: Madeira is 57 km long and 22 km wide (Visit Madeira), yet the mountain roads make the drive times above far longer than the map suggests.
Funchal
The default base for a first visit and mixed sightseeing with restaurants. Funchal has sub-areas: the Old Town (Zona Velha), the Lido hotel zone and the centre (Sé). Parking is the practical issue: the streets are steep, and garages in converted historic buildings in the Old Town and Sé are the tightest. A central address does not mean easy or included parking — ask whether it is private or on-site, reserved, the vehicle height and width limits, and whether the garage is charged separately. See our Madeira driving tips for driving in and around Funchal.

Câmara de Lobos
Close to Funchal on the same sunny side, a little quieter. Pico do Arieiro is 50 min away, Rabaçal an hour — a Funchal alternative if you want less city. Confirm on-site parking and the approach.
Calheta
The south-west base for Rabaçal (30 min) and Fanal (45), among the sunniest areas of the island. The price is distance from the airport (50 min) and Pico do Arieiro (1 h 15). Confirm on-site parking and the last stretch of the approach.
Ponta do Sol
The compromise base: Rabaçal 40 min, Fanal 50, Seixal 40, Porto Moniz 55, Pico do Arieiro 1 h 00, the airport 35. Nothing is close, but nothing is far. Confirm parking and the approach to the door.
Madalena do Mar
A quiet south-west village, similar to Calheta for hiking: Rabaçal 35 min, Fanal 45. Pico do Arieiro is 1 h 05 and the airport 45 min. Confirm on-site parking.
Jardim do Mar
The furthest south-west base from the airport (1 h 00) and Pico do Arieiro (1 h 25), but Rabaçal is 40 min and Fanal 55. A surf spot — check conditions and your ability. Ask whether the car reaches the door or luggage is carried from a separate car park.
Caniço
An airport-side base with a south-coast tendency toward sun: airport 15 min, Pico do Arieiro 40, Ponta de São Lourenço 25. Western hikes are long — Fanal is 1 h 20. Confirm parking and the last stretch of the approach.
Santa Cruz
The closest base to the airport (5 min) and a good fit for early flights. Pico do Arieiro is 40 min, Ponta de São Lourenço 15. Noise is property-specific, so ask about aircraft noise, overnight parking and late check-in.
Machico
Also 5 min from the airport, with Ponta de São Lourenço at 15 and Achada do Teixeira at 45. Fanal is 1 h 30 — the longest Fanal drive of the south and east coast bases. Ask about aircraft noise, overnight parking and late check-in.
Porto Moniz
The north-west for Fanal (25 min) and Seixal (15). Greener, cloudier and wetter than the south, with fewer services; the airport is 1 h 15 and Pico do Arieiro 1 h 35. A base for hikers and landscape lovers — for a first visit built around sightseeing and restaurants, Funchal is the usual default.
Seixal
A small north-coast base: Porto Moniz 15 min, Fanal 30, the airport 1 h 00. Ask whether the car reaches the door or luggage is carried from a separate car park.
São Vicente
The central north coast: Seixal 10 min, Porto Moniz 25, Fanal 40, the airport 50. São Vicente has a municipal tourist tax from April 2026 (Madeira RTP). Confirm on-site parking.
Santana
The most convenient north-coast base for the east: Achada do Teixeira 20 min, the airport 25, Pico do Arieiro 50. The trade-off is the west — Fanal 1 h 20, Rabaçal 1 h 35. Expect green, cloudier conditions.
Curral das Freiras
An inland mountain valley in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, not a sunny coastal resort. Pico do Arieiro is 35 min, but everything else is far. Choose it deliberately, and confirm the approach road and parking.
One base or two? If you stay long enough, a second base in the west or north makes sense for a hiking-heavy trip, with Funchal or the east as the first — the author's advice, not an official threshold. For routes that link the bases, see explore Madeira by car; for swimming by area, the best beaches in Madeira.
What a hiking day costs
Trail fees (non-residents)
- €4.50 per classified trail booked directly; €3.00 through a protocol operator.
- €10.50 for PR1 Vereda do Areeiro (incl. PR1.1, PR1.2, PR1.3) booked directly; €7.00 through a protocol operator.
- Exempt: residents of the Autonomous Region, children aged 12 or under (with ID), disability of 60% or more.
- Multi-trail passes exist.
Pico do Areeiro parking
- €4 per hour at the summit car park, first 30 minutes free, maximum €20 a day.
- €2 per hour at the lower car parks, first 30 minutes free.
- The ordinance lists higher hourly rates for 2027.
Source: Portaria n.º 48/2026 (Jornal Oficial da Região Autónoma da Madeira, 13 February 2026).
The fee does not change with your base, but your base decides how many classified trails you can reach in a sane drive, so several walking days add up. Book online before you go, and check trail status on the official IFCN or Visit Madeira trail list close to the date, because status changes. Visiting the Pico do Arieiro viewpoint itself does not need a hiking reservation; entering PR1 does (Visit Madeira). The roads to Pico do Arieiro and Achada do Teixeira can close in winter, so check before you drive up. On clear mornings, arrive early, and do not park on the verge.
Costs the online price may not show, and when to book
Tourist tax
Funchal charges €2 per night (max 7 nights). The council has approved raising it to €4 from January 2027, subject to public consultation. Other municipalities set their own tax — check your booking total.
Price direction, not prices
We do not publish nightly price bands per base. November to February is generally the cheaper stretch for Funchal hotels, so that is the window to compare if you search for a “cheap” stay; individual properties vary. Funchal parking tariffs are in our driving tips.
When to book
New Year's Eve (the Funchal fireworks) and Easter (28 March 2027) are the peaks. Price Christmas to New Year as its own peak, not an ordinary winter date, and book a cancellable room early. Reports on Funchal's New Year's Eve describe central road closures and little parking near the seafront; no official notice was checked for this page, so ask the property about parking and watch the council's announcements. If your dates are flexible, compare dates outside these peaks.

FAQ
Should I stay in Funchal if I have a rental car?
Yes, if your priorities are sightseeing, restaurants and Pico do Arieiro, which is 40 minutes away. No, if your main hikes are Rabaçal, Fanal or Porto Moniz: Funchal is 1 h 05 from Rabaçal and 1 h 15 from Fanal. Confirm parking with the property either way.
Which base is best for Pico do Arieiro?
Curral das Freiras (35 minutes), Funchal, Caniço and Santa Cruz (each 40 minutes) are the closest. Santana, Câmara de Lobos and Machico are 50. Calheta is 1 h 15 away.
Which base is best for Rabaçal and Fanal?
Calheta and Madalena do Mar are the closest on the south-west coast, with Rabaçal at 30 and 35 minutes and Fanal at 45. From the north, Porto Moniz is 25 minutes from Fanal and Seixal 30. Ponta do Sol sits between at 40 and 50.
Is the north coast a good base?
For hiking and landscape, yes. It is greener, cloudier and wetter than the south, with fewer services, and the airport is 50 minutes (São Vicente) to 1 h 15 (Porto Moniz) away. Santana is the easiest north-coast base for the airport (25 minutes) and Achada do Teixeira (20 minutes).
Which base is closest to the airport?
Santa Cruz and Machico are 5 minutes from the airport, Caniço 15, Funchal 20. See the Funchal airport guide for arrival and pick-up information.
How much do the hikes and Pico do Areeiro parking cost?
Non-residents booking directly pay €4.50 per classified trail and €10.50 for PR1 Vereda do Areeiro; lower rates (€3.00 and €7.00) apply through protocol operators. Residents of the Autonomous Region, children aged 12 or under (with ID) and people with a disability of 60% or more are exempt. Parking at the summit lot is €4 per hour (first 30 minutes free, maximum €20 a day); lower lots are €2 per hour. Source: Portaria n.º 48/2026.
Is there a tourist tax?
In Funchal, €2 per night for up to 7 nights, with an approved rise to €4 from January 2027 subject to public consultation. Other municipalities set their own, so check your booking.
Is parking a problem in Funchal?
It can be. Streets are steep and Old Town and Sé garages are the tightest. Ask whether the parking is private, reserved and large enough for your car, and whether it is charged separately.
Do I need two bases?
Not necessarily. A west or north second base makes sense for longer, hiking-heavy stays. For a short trip, pick the base that matches your main hike using the table above.
